Staff Picks for Best Beach Life
A day at the office for Park Ranger Laura Neu might include showing off some gators, setting up protection for nesting shore birds or snapping selfies with young anglers and their catch. A day at the office is a walk on the beach for this park interpreter at Sea Rim State Park. How would she spend it if she were off the clock?
The many ways to enjoy Sea Rim:
“Sea Rim State Park offers more than 5 miles of natural beach,” Neu says. “Take a stroll, look for shells like shark eyes, lightning whelks, Atlantic and Eastern Oysters, and many more! Want to try your hand at surf fishing? Ask to borrow some fishing gear at the park headquarters before you go!”
Beach not your scene? The park also contains more than 4,000 acres of marsh to explore. Bring your own kayak or flat-bottom boat to explore this unique and valuable ecosystem. From fishing and crabbing to birding and alligator watching.
Looking for more to do?
Neu suggests checking out Ranger-led events. Every weekend, rangers and volunteers host programs like Learn to Bird, Skulls and Shells, Sea Scavengers, and more.
Can’t make it to a ranger-led program? Ask about the Junior Ranger program! Borrow a backpack and learn about the world around you.
Into birding?
“Our Gambusia Nature Trail Boardwalk offers great views and even better spots to find birds, with four viewfinders installed to help see farther into the marsh. This is the best place to see birds in the park,” Neu says.
This beach is up for adoption
“Want to help make a difference at our park? Volunteer with us! Even if it is for the day,” Neu says. “Sea Rim State Park hosts two Adopt-A-Beach events in partnership with the General Land Office of Texas. The park is gearing up to host their Fall beach clean-up in September.”

East Beach – Wait for it……
East beach is currently closed due to a cut that has adversely impacted the sensitive ecology of the protected dune and marshlands. TPWD is currently working closely with multiple agencies on a long-term repair to the cut that will hopefully stabilize East beach and allow for more consistent maintenance in the near future, Neu says.

Ranger Laura guided an upgrade to our Sea Rim activity book. Callie Summerlin loves Sea Rim in an artistic way. As Marketing Director at Port Arthur Convention & Visitors Bureau, Summerlin reimagined an activity book about the park’s perks and adventures for kids (that adults also love).

Laura Neu, Park Interpreter
Laura Neu job is a day at the beach, literally. As park interpreter, she helps visitors of all ages appreciate the coastal life of this Gulf shore from gators and gulls to crabs and mink. The park’s programs in include Adopt A Beach and KidFish.
