Gail Pellum of Port Arthur organizes annual Juneteenth events to remember history and promote unity.

The 19th of June, 1865, is when the enslaved of Texas learned the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed long ago, on Jan. 1, 1863. They had not learned they were supposed to be freed. Texans have historically observed this date.

Cultural events of 2019 include:

  • June 4, flag raising ceremony at Jefferson County Sub Courthouse
  • June 19 Dredhead Sunrise, 5 a.m. on Lakeshore Drive Boardwalk
  • June 19 Love on Family Day, all day, Barbara Jacket Park, Stilwell and Procter Streets. Booths open at noon. Marcus Garvey Torchlight Parade beginning at 6 p.m., along Stillwell to Barbara Jacket Park.

Pellum says Juneteenth events are designed to promote unity. Call her at 409-332-1709 for information.
