Port Arthur’s Juneteenth events will honor 161 years of freedom. Port Arthur Cultural Coalition will present this year’s celebration. Events include a flag raising, boxing, a beauty pageant, brunch, a parade, and a festival.
NFL linebacker and Super Bowl champion Elandon Roberts, a Port Arthur native will be grand marshal of the parade on June 19. All major events are free and open to the public. For details, visit: www.pajuneteenth.com

Do you know the history? On the 19th of June, 1865, enslaved people in Texas learned the Emancipation Proclamation was signed long ago, on Jan. 1, 1863. Because of this, they discovered they were supposed to have been freed. Texans historically observe this date with various cultural celebrations.
