Juneteeth Cultural Events

A flag raising and vehicle caravan will be part of Juneteenth observation in Port Arthur. The group will be “apart (distancing) but still together.”

Gail Pellum of the African American Cultural Society organizes annual Juneteenth events to remember history and promote unity.

Cultural events of June 19, 2020 include:

* 10 a.m. – Flag raising with Michael Shane Sinegal, Precinct 3 Commissioner, at the Jefferson County Sub Courthouse, 525 Lakeshore Drive.

* 6 p.m. – Vehicle caravan from Stillwell Boulevard to Barbara Jacket Park. (Lineup will begin at 5 p.m.) NAACP will provide voices and refreshment.

The 19th of June, 1865, is when the enslaved of Texas learned the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed long ago, on Jan. 1, 1863. They had not learned they were supposed to be freed. Texans have historically observed this date.
