Zydeco woman photo by Rita Manuel for Museum of the Gulf Coast

Zydeco Photo Exhibit

Museum of the Gulf Coast will exhibit photographs of Port Arthur’s Rita Colligan Manuel from Oct. 5-Dec. 28, 2024. View photographic memories of some of the greatest zydeco musicians. An opening reception will begin at 4 p.m.  Saturday, Oct. 5, in the Dunn Gallery. This event is free to the public.

Manuel is a native of Opelousas, La. Her Creole culture inspired her to pick up a camera 45 years ago and preserve the extraordinary history she witnessed. She and her husband, Pete, were popular zydeco disc jockeys on local radio stations.

Her photos will include those of Boozoo Chavis, John Delafose, Beau Jocque, Buckwhet, Clifton Chenier, C.J. Chenier, Willis Proudhomme and Roy Carrier. Zydeco bands often include family members. Manuel’s photos often captured big names in their earlier years. These include Keigh Frank, Geno Delafose, Chubbyo, Big Nate and Lil Nate, Rob Pitre, Lady D, Step Rideau, Brian Jack, Noonie and J-Paul. They are a testament to the enduring popularity of this style of music and the region’s Creole Culture. C.J. Chenier is a native of Port Arthur.
