Honor Juneteenth and meet the community at this annual celebration.

The African American Culture Society arranges festivities that typically include a parade with activities to follow at Barbara Jacket Park. The following event is not yet confirmed for 2025:

• Marcus Garvey Juneteenth Torchlight Parade – 6 p.m., June 19, Stillwell Boulevard to Barbara Jacket Park (lineup at 5 p.m.).

Here’s some history

Do you know the history? On the 19th of June, 1865, enslaved people in Texas learned the Emancipation Proclamation was signed long ago, on Jan. 1, 1863. Because of this, they discovered they were supposed to have been freed. Texans historically observe this date with various cultural celebrations.
