On the 19th of June\, 1865\, enslaved people in Texas learned the Emancipation Proclamation was signed long ago\, on Jan. 1\, 1863. Because of this\, they discovered they were supposed to have been freed. Texans historically observe this date with various cultural celebrations. \n
