SUMMARY:Lightening in a Camera: The Photography of Jerry Connally
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: May 6 from 6:30pm – 8:00pm\nThe Museum of the Gulf Coast begins its next exhibit with an opening reception for Lightning in a Camera: The Photography of Jerry Connally in the Dunn Gallery on Saturday\, May 6th\, from 6:30p – 8:00p. Wine and refreshments will be served\, and the event is free and open to the public. \nOpening Exhibit at the Museum of the Gulf Coast\nJerry Connally’s photographs have been recognized repeatedly in area contests and include Best in Show Awards in the Nederland Heritage Festival\, Ice House Museum\, and Riverfest photography contests – along with a first place in the 2022 Nederland Heritage Festival and a People’s Choice Award Beaumont Camera Club 2023. \nPhoto by Jerry Connally\nConnally knows exactly how long he has been snapping photos. He bought a simple point-and-shoot camera when his granddaughter was born 12 years ago. He estimates that he has taken hundreds of images of her. \nJerry’s journey to becoming an award-winning photographer was a surprise even to him. His service station technician vocation requires him to drive hundreds of miles across nearly every road in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. As he began taking more pictures of the outdoor scenery he saw on his daily drive home\, Jerry realized he needed a better camera. That led to the purchase of an Olympus E-M1 Mark III\, and “taking the long way home\,” became more of a daily occurrence. \nAfter he joined a local camera club and read a book called Zen Photography\, his path was set. What followed was the unleashing of a gift that was probably there all along. Connally’s photos capture the spectacular natural imagery of our region and are a reminder of how fortunate we are to be a part of it. \nThe exhibit includes images of birds\, flowers\, insects\, and a rarely-seen white rainbow. Jerry is perhaps best known for his photography of lightning storms and advises\, “You want to see the storm moving to the left or right\, or moving away\, but never toward you.” \nPhoto by Jerry Connally\nCurator Robert Fong says\, “Jerry always brings something extra to his images. His photograph of the MLK Bridge as Hurricane Harvey was approaching is my favorite of the bridge. He has taken so many great photos that it was difficult to narrow the exhibit down to the ones we have chosen.” \nJerry states that taking a large number of photographs was important to his development as a photographer. “Sometimes I would get up at three in the morning and go take some pictures\, or if there was a meteor shower\, I might stay up all night.” \nOh\, and the point-and-shoot camera Jerry started with . . . his granddaughter Kylie has it now\, and she is well on her way to following in her grandfather’s footsteps. \n\nThe exhibit Lightning in a Camera: The Photography of Jerry Connally will be on display from May 6th to July 29th in the Dunn Gallery at the Museum of the Gulf Coast in Port Arthur. Opening reception sponsored by the Port Arthur Convention and Visitors Bureau. \nArticle In the Port Arthur News

SUMMARY:Cajun Heritage Fest 2023
DESCRIPTION:Cajun Heritage Fest is for all who love to let the good times roll in Port Arthur. Our Texas twist on celebrating Cajun music\, dancing and flavors draws our Louisiana neighbors to Port Arthur for a day of making new friends and catching up with old ones. \nBands for 2023 include:\nJamie Bergeron & The Kickin’ Cajuns \nTravis Matte & the Kingpins \nDylan Aucoin & the Judice Ramblers \nLeroy Thomas & The Zydeco Roadrunners \nEver experience a crawfish race? Dare to enter the crawfish eating contest? Want to cut a rug? If you don’t know how to do these things\, a Cajun will be glad to show you how. \nCajuns from Louisiana crossed the border to call Southeast Texas home and shared their music\, crawfish and gumbo with us. The Southeast Texas Arts Council hosts this annual event. \nVendors with food and crafts will tempt guests. Activities in the past have included a dance contest and good times. Southeast Texas Arts Council is the sponsor. \nVisit Cajun Fest

SUMMARY:World Bird Migration Day
DESCRIPTION:Learn about our area birds\nCome on out to Pleasure Island on Saturday for some family-friendly activities about bird-friendly Port Arthur. Learn more about the birds that live and pass through our area on World Migratory Bird Day\, Saturday\, Oct. 8.The Port Arthur Convention & Visitors Bureau is partnering with Sea Rim State Park\, Shangri La Gardens and the Pleasure Island Commission to present an open house from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. \n   Bring binoculars if you have them\, or borrow some\nPort Arthur and Beaumont are in both the Central and Mississippi Flyways and that means impressive spring and fall migrations. Warblers\, flycatchers\, thrushes\, tanagers and orioles are passing through Sabine Woods and other areas\, headed south for the winter. Our peak fall migration continues through Oct. 29. \nThis event will include free educational activities and information to promote bird-friendly practices. Join us at the Pleasure Island Commission office\, 520 Pleasure Pier Boulevard\, next to the Port Arthur Yacht Club. \nJoin Shangri La Gardens to discover all about a bird’s feather. Feathers and wings help birds soar great distances during their migrations. Explore the different types of feathers and try your hand at matching feathers to the bird species they belong to. Come ready to explore as we celebrate the strength and beauty of migratory birds. Kathleen Nelligan\, interpretive programs manager\, will share information on birding opportunities at Shangri La. \nSea Rim State Park’s interpreter will demonstrate best binocular use and hopefully get some great island birds in view. Bring your own or use the park’s lenders. \nTake what you’ve learned and enjoy Pleasure Island and the rest of the city on Saturday. Some of our favorite shore birds include the killdeer\, roseate spoonbill\, American avocet and yellow-crowned night heron. \nPort Arthur’s Pleasure Island\, Sea Rim State Park\, Sabine Woods\, McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge are home to shore wading and marsh birds. Our spring and fall migrations are spectacular. \nThis year’s World Migratory Bird Day focuses on light pollution\nOther topics will include native plants to attract birds and butterflies\, keeping cats indoors during migration\, dark skies for better migration and bird-strike prevention. \nFor more information\, call (409) 985-7822. \n
