Club part of Port Arthur’s seaside community \nCome learn more about S.A.L.T. membership at the clubhouse from noon to 2 p.m. March 5. \nPleasure Island’s Sabine Lake\, abundant marshlands and the Gulf of Mexico at Sea Rim State Park are popular with avid anglers and those with brand new sea legs.  \n“Sabine Lake and common estuaries offer some of the best fishing in Texas\,” Max Smith says.   \nHe knows what he’s talking about. He’s served as president of the The Salt Water Angler’s League – Sabine Chapter.  Redfish\, trout and flounder are Sabine Lake hits.  \nThe League hosts the Annual S.A.L.T. Summer Classic on Pleasure Island. Speckled trout\, redfish\, flounder\, black drum\, sheepshead\, croaker\, and blackjack redfish are the focus.   \nThe S.A.L.T. Club\, a Not For Profit 501c-3 organization\, has a goal of introducing youths to the sport of fishing\, while teaching them about conservation of fisheries and natural resources.  The group has a free kids-only tournament on the second Saturday in October. Cash and trophies go to winners with three age groups and three fish categories in each age group.   \nMembers help with Cheniere’s Wounded Heroes Tournament in Johnson Bayou\, Louisiana\, the first Saturday in October. The Sabine Chapter also helps with Heroes on the Water tournaments\, which help wounded service men and women. Learn more about the birds that live and pass through our area on World Migratory Bird Day\, Saturday\, Oct. 8.The Port Arthur Convention & Visitors Bureau is partnering with Sea Rim State Park\, Shangri La Gardens and the Pleasure Island Commission to present an open house from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. \n   Bring binoculars if you have them\, or borrow some\nPort Arthur and Beaumont are in both the Central and Mississippi Flyways and that means impressive spring and fall migrations. Warblers\, flycatchers\, thrushes\, tanagers and orioles are passing through Sabine Woods and other areas\, headed south for the winter. Our peak fall migration continues through Oct. 29. \nThis event will include free educational activities and information to promote bird-friendly practices. Join us at the Pleasure Island Commission office\, 520 Pleasure Pier Boulevard\, next to the Port Arthur Yacht Club. \nJoin Shangri La Gardens to discover all about a bird’s feather. Feathers and wings help birds soar great distances during their migrations. Explore the different types of feathers and try your hand at matching feathers to the bird species they belong to. Come ready to explore as we celebrate the strength and beauty of migratory birds. Kathleen Nelligan\, interpretive programs manager\, will share information on birding opportunities at Shangri La. \nSea Rim State Park’s interpreter will demonstrate best binocular use and hopefully get some great island birds in view. Bring your own or use the park’s lenders. \nTake what you’ve learned and enjoy Pleasure Island and the rest of the city on Saturday.
