SUMMARY:Lightening in a Camera: The Photography of Jerry Connally
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: May 6 from 6:30pm – 8:00pm\nThe Museum of the Gulf Coast begins its next exhibit with an opening reception for Lightning in a Camera: The Photography of Jerry Connally in the Dunn Gallery on Saturday\, May 6th\, from 6:30p – 8:00p. Wine and refreshments will be served\, and the event is free and open to the public. \nOpening Exhibit at the Museum of the Gulf Coast\nJerry Connally’s photographs have been recognized repeatedly in area contests and include Best in Show Awards in the Nederland Heritage Festival\, Ice House Museum\, and Riverfest photography contests – along with a first place in the 2022 Nederland Heritage Festival and a People’s Choice Award Beaumont Camera Club 2023. \nPhoto by Jerry Connally\nConnally knows exactly how long he has been snapping photos. He bought a simple point-and-shoot camera when his granddaughter was born 12 years ago. He estimates that he has taken hundreds of images of her. \nJerry’s journey to becoming an award-winning photographer was a surprise even to him. His service station technician vocation requires him to drive hundreds of miles across nearly every road in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. As he began taking more pictures of the outdoor scenery he saw on his daily drive home\, Jerry realized he needed a better camera. That led to the purchase of an Olympus E-M1 Mark III\, and “taking the long way home\,” became more of a daily occurrence. \nAfter he joined a local camera club and read a book called Zen Photography\, his path was set. What followed was the unleashing of a gift that was probably there all along. Connally’s photos capture the spectacular natural imagery of our region and are a reminder of how fortunate we are to be a part of it. \nThe exhibit includes images of birds\, flowers\, insects\, and a rarely-seen white rainbow. Jerry is perhaps best known for his photography of lightning storms and advises\, “You want to see the storm moving to the left or right\, or moving away\, but never toward you.” \nPhoto by Jerry Connally\nCurator Robert Fong says\, “Jerry always brings something extra to his images. His photograph of the MLK Bridge as Hurricane Harvey was approaching is my favorite of the bridge. He has taken so many great photos that it was difficult to narrow the exhibit down to the ones we have chosen.” \nJerry states that taking a large number of photographs was important to his development as a photographer. “Sometimes I would get up at three in the morning and go take some pictures\, or if there was a meteor shower\, I might stay up all night.” \nOh\, and the point-and-shoot camera Jerry started with . . . his granddaughter Kylie has it now\, and she is well on her way to following in her grandfather’s footsteps. \n\nThe exhibit Lightning in a Camera: The Photography of Jerry Connally will be on display from May 6th to July 29th in the Dunn Gallery at the Museum of the Gulf Coast in Port Arthur. Opening reception sponsored by the Port Arthur Convention and Visitors Bureau. \nArticle In the Port Arthur News

SUMMARY:Gumbo ClayFest 2023
DESCRIPTION:GUMBO CLAYFEST 2023\nThe Art Studio\, Inc. (TASI) will host Gumbo Clayfest\, a celebration of ceramic arts\, July 6-8 at its facility\, located at 720 Franklin St in downtown Beaumont. The ClayFest is a public event involving demonstrations and workshops for those interested in making ceramics\, admiring completed works\, or just interested in watching the fascinating process. \nEvent Website \nGumbo ClayFest will feature nine nationally-recognized ceramists who will demonstrate the different techniques for which they are known. \n“Clay is one of the oldest arts there is\,” said Greg Busceme\, TASI’s Executive Director. “It’s an art that is 20\,000 years old. From cooking pots to drinking vessels to sculptures\, it’s one of the first things human beings did once they harnessed fire and figured out how clay reacted with it. It was one of the things that made us human.” \nGumbo ClayFest kicks off with an opening reception on First Thursday\, July 6\, 5-8pm with complimentary homemade gumbo provided by supporters of The Art Studio. Attendees will have a chance to meet and talk to the visiting artists. The festivities continue all day Friday and Saturday when the public is invited to sit in the Studio as the artists continue working on their projects. \n“This festival is all about the clay and the people who love it. Highly knowledgeable ceramists from across the nation will descend on Southeast Texas and will share their ideas and special techniques to participants along with clay activities\, panel discussions\, presentations\, and parties! Great for anyone who has an interest in clay and for artists from other disciplines. For any young or beginning aspirant it is a must do! De rigueur! You will advance your knowledge years ahead of where you are! Some of these artists I have known for many years and others are more recent friends; all are eager to come to our community and I hope hope hope you want to meet them too. It will mean a lot to me to have everyone come meet and learn from these generous ceramists and friends.” \nActivities during the three-day event will include live demonstrations by the artists working on projects in the clay studio\, the construction and firing of kilns\, an exhibition of unique artwork in the gallery\, local food trucks such as Cracklin’ Kings and BIG Empanadas on site to serve food\, presentations of the featured artists’ past works and experience in the clay world\, and plenty of opportunities to learn first-hand and ask questions about ceramics from the masters.
