Wayne Toups loves, loves, loves that audiences know all the words when he plays in Port Arthur. The Cajun/zydeco musician is returning to Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas to close out the festival, at 5:30 p.m.  Sunday, Feb. 7.

“The Golden Triangle has been one of our homes for a long time. We’re always excited to come that way,” Toups said. “The reception is just so great. We have a bunch of friends who live in the area, also.”

Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas is set for Feb. 4-7 in downtown Port Arthur with a Sweet Soiree theme. The family-friendly event is full of lighted parades, bead tossing and catching, Cajun flavors, concerts and a carnival.

Toups is about to release what he figures is something like his 16th or 17th album called…. wait for it…. “Wayne Toups.” After a 30-year career, it’s okay if you lose count of how many records you make, he joked via telephone from his home in Lafayette, La.

Toups is honored at Museum of the Gulf Coast’s music hall of fame, beside performers with area ties such as The Big Bopper, Janis Joplin, Tracy Byrd and Johnny Winter and Edgar Winter.

While fans sing along to old favorites like “Tupelo Honey,” Toups said they may get a taste of some of his new sounds, but left that to a tease.

“We’d like to throw some tunes in there,” he said.

One thing the Grammy-Award winning performer can guarantee, and that is the excitement he and his band have at returning to Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas.

“It seems to get bigger every year,” Toups said.

Toups has an additional “new release” on the way. At the time of his phone call, he and his wife, Casey, have a new baby.

Here’s the basics of Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas: The festival is primed  for visitors to taste a family-friendly festival filled with lighted parades, a carnival and concerts.
