It’s time to grab an umbrella and get ready for the party.
Mardi Gras Southeast Texas has added a new event that comes with a cash prize for the best of the best — the 2015 Umbrella Brigade Parade.
Participants can enter for free and the only requirement is an umbrella provided by Mardi Gras Southeast Texas and decorations by you.
Cynthia Hinds, ball captain for the Majestic Krewe of Aurora, was busy decorating her umbrella for the contest. The tri-colored Mardi Gras umbrella was beginning to look festive with some rhinestones on top and beads hanging down from the inside.
“You have to have an imagination,” Hinds said from her Port Neches home on Wednesday. “The possibilities are endless.”
Mardi Gras Southeast Texas Umbrella Brigade Parade will be held Sunday, Feb. 15 in the festival grounds. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places.
Application deadline for entry is Feb. 4 . Applications must be returned to the Mardi Gras Store, 3830 FM 365. Participants will be given an umbrella to decorate. Festive, elaborate, original and most of all – creative umbrellas are welcome so make it fun.
Costuming is options and need not be elaborate or participants may be in Mardi Gras attire.
Traditional Mardi Gras throws are not required but are welcome. No candy permitted.
Music is encouraged to add to the festivities. Participants may have decorated small wagons, push carts or golf carts to carry beads and/for music.
A number will be given at registration and must be placed on the umbrella for judging.
All ages welcome and registration is limited to 500 participants.
